we got burned on this one. I referred my wife an we tried to create online account before the 48 hours and had to call in to get the online account to make some reservations, the MR agent created the online account (or signup) on the phone and the referral code fell apart. we did not get the referral bonus for a few stays and emailing MR explained that the Phone signup overrode the referral signup
