Magazines are in the SECOND shelf, below the one marked something like "No Magazines." Many seem to overlook the presence of a second shelf.
Another thing I have seen some do is to use the shoebag from the amenity kit as a place to put items (not valuable, like wallet or cell phone, unless you are seated at the window or with a trusted seatmate,) and hang it from the coathook.
The centrally located vertically oriented "glove box" like space (between seats) that holds a couple of water bottles is also a place some items can be placed during the flight.
DO be careful of putting items in the footwell extension space - even shoes can be mashed and mangled if the footrest is fully extended and the bed is fully reclined.
Finally, fiddle with the controls until you find your predilect reclining position, and use the Memory button to fix it - that makes it easy to recover that position when you change seat position to exit or allow a fellow passenger to exit / enter.

While I normally fly ORD-FRA on the 763, as a result of the MD-80 mess I flew DFW-FRA with the NGBC seats on the 777 and the differences seemed minor -- the IFE system; a glovebox-like compartment that's great for cell phones, wallets and other small items; slight difference in the work light and tray table; the inside armrest will raise to give better access to a small storage tray; a single privacy divider is permanently installed between seats; and I never did find the magazines -- but the seats seemed to be the same as reported in the rest of JonNYC's post.
