I guess I hail from the same era as the OP, so I say that a hard copy letter via snail mail will carry more weight and get more notice than an e-mail. However, being the retentive type, I would follow up my snail mail letter with an e-mail if you don't get a response within a reasonable timeframe. In fact, I might even go with a phone call to the recipient of the letter saying "just following up on my letter of X date..."
But that's just the old-school in me.
