First, I think this episode highlights the problems with SSSS/continuous/random screening. This passenger, Mandi, did not set off the WTMD, so the TSA brought this on themselves by "creating" an alarm and then trying to resolve it. (Incidentally, the last time I got SSSS--a few weeks ago--no hand wand was used at all.)
I'd like to know what sort of weapon these could resemble. The key of alarms and their resolution is to identify dangerous objects, not just items that set off an alarm. If that were the case, passengers would have to remove zippers and surgical implants. The goal is not to create an alarm-free passenger.
Above all, this is good news. A passenger has taken a stand, spoken up for herself, contacted the media and an attorney. The media could have demolished her, focusing on the "alternative culture" or derogatory comments about piercings. Nope. The media seems to be on our side here.
Let's hope this paves the way for many more passengers to speak up.
