Foregoing the 1% cash-back so as to get 1 mile/$1 spend is very reasonable, perhaps even compelling. Foregoing 5% cash-back to get a mile for $1 spend is very
unreasonable, even absurd, as you imply. Somewhere between those extremes, much closer to one than the other, it might be seen as a toss up.
