There are SO many variables (your budget, time of arrival, length of time you've been flying, amount of luggage) but yes, it is a spectacular indulgence and puts you in the mindset that you are on a special trip.

Whenever I meet friends, we take a water taxi into town. When I'm heading to the city, I take the Blue Bus - its a couple of Euro, air conditioned and non-stop to Piazzale Roma, then I grab the vaporetto.

I for one think the Alilaguna "water boat" is a nightmare.
