For a different experience in cheap fast food, try any of the hamburger stands in the LA Area. Typically greek owned and have the usual fare:
Thin grilled hamburgers on oversized buns with lots of shredded letuce and thousand island dressing.
Tough pastami sandwiches, but they are large and a good value.
Good grilled chicken sandwiches.
Oh so very true. Jim's Burger and Galaxy Hamburgers are the only two I can think of now, but there are tons more. LA wrote the book on burgers many years ago. It is these very LA burger joints that In and Out tries to copy. (They do a decent job BTW)
