I'd not take Erfurt off of the list if your interests include the historical, architectural and literature. In addition to the many attractions in Erfurt proper, it is a very short journey to Weimar, where you can visit the Goethe attractions and the Bauhaus museum, and from which also pay an important (if somber) visit to the Buchenwald concentration camp (Weimar city bus #6 makes the trip from the city center). And also in Weimar, I think that they just reopened the Anna Amalia library, which was partially burned so tragically a few years ago.
