UA stopped accepting requests for Star Alliance upgrades last May, and they have never returned. The only airline where one can upgrade using UA miles is on Trans atlantic travel on Lufthansa. UA and QF really have the Oz market cornered, but it will be interesting if Virgin Blue starts flying to the US and whether they offer a C class.
