Hate to say it, but the best pies may be the frozen Sarah Lee Signature Selection fruit pies (note this is only Signature Selection pies, not other imposters with slightly different names in the Sarah Lee line). The crust is exquisite when eaten an hour or so after baking. Not so bad a day or two later.
Unfortunately, these pies (rated # 1 frozen by Consumer Reports) have also been rated by the Center for Science in the Public Interest as dangerous to your heart due to vast amounts of transfat etc. Still, a few slices a year can't hurt?
IMHO, the German Apple with strussel top is the best.
