I find it really depends on the hotel and it is based on availability. Resort-type hotels that cater to consumers tend to have strict checkout terms. Everywhere else I find them to be quite flexible. I've often been told that I can stay as long as I want...sometimes until 10-11pm the day of checkout. It doesn't surprise me one bit that you were denied late checkout at the hotel you specified.
