It may take up to 20 minutes for the transit, but often a little less.

I misconnected last Fri morn, if all went OK it was a 1/2 hr layover, both flights from 'E' but arrived E4 out of E18. What I thought of on the flight was what if I got to the connecting gate with 10 mins to spare and the flight was either oversold or had alot of people trying to go stand-by, would CO have protected my seat or since I wasnt at the Gate (still on the inbound flight) within 15 mins of the departure time did CO have the right to give the seat away (dont know if they did) I arrived at the gate 2 mins after the departure time and was previously protected on the next flight to EWR an hr later.

But Im sure CO flys to some places just 1 flight a day or that the next flight there is hrs later. So should the OP worry if they get to the gate late but in time to catch the flight but after the 15 mins before departure, when all seats can be given away? If the flight is empty then no problem, except if they leave the gate early.
