Not Soc, but I do London often. I make the reservation for my actual first night. I request early check-in and they note my expected arrival time. Unless you are landing at 6 am you can back up your arrival time a little. Suprisingly, when I arrive, at 9 or 10 am, my room is ready much more often than not. I have never been requested to pay any extra, etc. Brussels is pretty good about this too. Spain not so good, but smaller cities. My experience is that the larger more international cities "get it."
