If you are a member of two frequent flyer programs can you present another airline's membership card if you are already a member of the airline which you will be flying?

For example, if you are a member of both Cathay Pacific and American Airlines program, can you present your CX membership card when you fly American Airlines? Or can you only do that if you aren't a member of airline you will be flying?
