I'd posit that the administration's purpose is pandering to one or more a subset of the US citizens (or in Mr. Chertoff's case, attempting to pander to two subsets - the environmental crowd and the 'stop illegals' crowd). I'd also posit that the people in charge of the TSA are just following with that pandering theme, after all, good theater is intended to make folks believe something that they know not to be true.
I'm sure the antelope in AZ will appreciate not being able to migrate. That is so enviromentally sound Also the light pollution from the "string of pearls" (the lights that are on top of the fence) - the energy that goes into that and the gas guzzling SUV's that the border patrol run constantly (must have our AC on don'tcha know...) But I guess it will keep us all "safe" right? Their behaviour is also very much like that of the TSA. Once they came under the blanket of DHS the whole attitude changed.
The fact that every act of terrorism has been produced by people who were in this country 100% legally seems to be lost in all of this. The TSA is just another facet of this keeping us safe illusion.
