Interesting that your friend found AS uncomfortable. I flew LAX-DCA in AS First last month (seat 2A, 737-800) and found the seat comfortable (albeit not a United First Suite), food good, digi-player nice, and service friendly and personal. I must say it was a nice change from a typical United transcon--and a fraction of the price of a UA First Suite.
