An alternative is Wisk tablets, found in any grocery store--individual tabs wrapped 2 per package in a box of 24 or more. Even if the washer is a front loader, you can crumble the tablets to put them in the detergent dispenser.

I don't think the Wisk tablets exist any longer...I've looked for them in supermarkets in several states as they were my standard laundry soap
