If CO is really contemplating putting 9 across on the 787, this would mean that the coach seat would be about 1.78 inches narrower, or about 15.5 inches wide. That seems hard to believe, frankly. Currently, the narrowest coach seat in long haul coach is 16.5 inches on ANA.
Your calculations aren't quite right. The default (ie 8 across) configuration uses 18.5" seats. The 9-across configuration can be done with 17.2" seats. Which is obviously the same as is currently found on all CO 737 and 757 planes. Of course, it's a downgrade from the 17.9" seats of the widebodies.
