BA policy on missed flights and connections?

What is BA policy with inflexible tickets if you miss a BA flight on a separate ticket because the incoming flight on another carrier was late? I assumed that BA would transfer you to the next available flight, but in a discussion on the AA Board (mainly about AA policy which I think is more flexible):

We tried to tough it out, reckoning that common sense would prevail and that they wouldn't delay the flight just to get our bags off. Wrong! Bags came off and we had to buy new tickets.
When I missed a flight on a cheap BA ticket to Paris because of a horrendous security line in T4 early one morning, BA were quite happy to transfer me to the next flight (said it happened all the time). But maybe they are stricter on misconnects?
