I just don't want to open my luggage and discover my clothes are covered in Pepsi.

Not a stupid question at all. A few years ago I was meeting a friend from the UK in Paris. He had a simple request. A&W Root Beer. It's something not available (at the time) in Europe.

So I packed 24 cans of A&W's finest into one of those styrofoam wine shipping containers and checked it as luggage. Everything was in excellent condition when we arrived in Paris and I only received a strange look from the French customs agent for declaring A&W Root Beer.

While in Paris I did some wine shopping and packed it back into the styrofoam shipping container and checked it again coming back through. I declared the 12 bottles of wine. The customs agent did some quick math in his head and determined that it was a waste of time to charge me the tariff as it would have been less than a dollar.
