There was some initial confusion but after speaking to the AA RTW supervisor she confirmed that the prevailing rules at the time of issue (i.e. no segment count for surface) would apply through the life of the ticket.

My problem was complicated by several "phantom" segments - originally planned, then eliminated - that were still showing on the PNR, giving me a 28-segment, two-transcon, two Atlantic-crossing RTW - - also resolved in the "final" reissue.
