Continental serves meals on flights over a certain length of time during "mealtimes" [sic]. The website defines meal times.

In terms of what a snack is, it depends on the time of day, I suppose. I typically fly CLE to SFO at night, and the snack in the back is peanuts or pretzels, while those in the front of the bus are served the cold plate.
