That's really not the history of it. The ads are there to (help) pay for the site. Premium FT was introduced at the request of members. Thus the ads aren't there to encourage people to pay.
It may not have started that way, but it sure seems to have morphed into that function, especially given the seemingly-indoctrinated response from
wharvey.
