I would guess that, for the most part companies, that offers these bonuses, do not realize how big of a risk they are taking. Ralph's, a supermarket chain, contracted with a company to provide 2 free nights. I forget the purchase requirements, and someone gave me there offer. The 2 free nights would have been in a not so great hotel, if you could ever get it booked.
Well, that failed miserably, but eventually people ended up with a 2 night Marriott Award, bookable through Marriott for a large variety of Marriott branded hotels.
So, if you trust the company that is offering the bonus, then I would recommend taking them up on it. If their contractor fails to provide, then you can probably get something from the well known chain (Kohl's, Macy's, etc)
