Need more info! @:-) You're not telling us what type of aircraft you're flying. For example, some of the flights between SFO & ORD (which is a route you say you regularly fly) use Boeing 757 or widebodies (Boeing 767 & 777) with a goodly number of FC seats, while others are on the littler planes (Boeing 737, Airbus 320) with only 8-12 FC seats. The aircraft makes a huge difference, esp. given that SFO apparently has the most 1K & UGS members in the system.
