I know, it was a reach. It is all an embarrassing farce. I tell passenger x that he or she must remove his or her flip-flops and have them x-rayed, but allow, in compliance w/ current TSA rules, passenger y to wear a ten-gallon hat through the mag w/o x-raying it (or even inspecting what he might have hidden in such a capacious cap).
