If you choose "New" while in Network Port Configurations does it allow you to choose "Built-in Ethernet" as the port? If that shows as a choice for Port, you may be able to add it. (Just choose Built-in Ethernet, give it a name and save; if it takes you should be able to configure it.) If it doesn't show, sounds like a hardware problem.
