are you sure the port is active? I think its the same in the GUI as the command line (which is what I know better)...but if you:

go into system preferences --> Network
select NETWORK PORT CONFIGURATIONS from the SHOW: drop-down
make sure everything has a check by it (or at leas the ethernet device).

then maybe as a double check:
Utilities folder --> Terminal
then type: ifconfig
see what it lists... typically the ethernet is en2 on the portables... so see if there are errors or an IP address or anything telling... or just post the entire output here.
It only shows the Airport. No ethernet connection shown.
I tried to run the diagnostics but it will not recognize it
