Another plus for the afternoon flight is that its mainline rather than the Comair RJ. If you miss the flight, I would think that DL would be responsible for rebooking you. However, generally speaking the DL staff at JFK is less than helpful - we encountered a series of mishaps when we misconnected going CVG-JFK-IST a few years ago in paid Business class.
