On arrival you can't, you are forced to go through Canada customs formalities where you will have to collect your bag and dumped outside the secure area
Now you could then turn around and check back in for the NW flight, clear US formalities then security and drop your bag and I'm pretty sure that once you are back in the secure area the B and A concourse are connected. Be aware though that those A1 gates are in the satelitte terminal and you have to be bused there so once leave plenty of time to get from B10 to A1, it's a hike.

Once you clear Canada customs you can store your bag at the "Travel Store" in the terminal until you are ready to check back in for the NW flight. 7 hours isn't a huge amount of time once you take away the time you need to get back to the airport to check in that's probably enough time to go downtown on public transit and behave like a tourist for a while.
