Not really very competitive markets, where if the cities didn't have tag trips they'd likely have no service at all.

Until this decade there used to be some really interesting tag routes. TW used to fly a 767 between SEA and PDX at midnight or so, and flew STL-BDL-PWM (or STL-ALB-PWM?) as well. There were probably dozens of such cases, but they're mostly gone now for efficiency/competitive reasons.
