Langkawi is very different from Phuket or Bali. Its very laid back and not meant to be touristy (hence not a shopping paradise). Its this very characteristic that appeals to a select group of vacationers, while the majority would go to Phuket instead.

Kuah can never be compared to Patong (or even Karon/Kata) or Kuta . Its was not built to cater for tourists but more for local residents (though there are a couple of tourist shops). Majority of foreign visitors do not even step foot onto Kuah especially those staying at Datai Bay or Tanjung Rhu, or even those at Pantai Cenang.

One thing that I enjoy while in LGK is the lack of traffic (and traffic lights) and the very well maintained roads on the island. Its actually the best place to drive in Malaysia.
