Thumbs Up for Westin Langkawi

Just returned from a 4 night award stay here, which was booked at the 4k points per night rate. The rate is now a whopping 10k points per night! Since the time that I booked, this hotel went up by 2 categories. Needless to say, I think I got a very good deal. If I were to return, I'd probably pay for the room rather than use points, since I believe you can get good rates here.

Overall, this was an excellent, enjoyable stay, though a few service details keep me from saying this was a five star experience. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the grounds are kept spotless, and the beach is very relaxing and private. The hotel was fully booked due to the ironman competition on 24 Feb, but it didn't have a crowded feel to it, and you could certainly find seclusion if you wanted to.

There are some rooms on facing the recreation center side that have a really crappy view of villa construction going on. Avoid these if you can. I was told they are building another 30+ villas, which, though smaller than suites, have its own splash pool and are of course more private.

Check-In: As gold on an award stay, I didn't get a category upgrade, but did get a 2nd floor room with a partial ocean view. My room wasn't ready (but I arrived around 11:30 am and wasn't surprised by this), so I had lunch and drinks at Breeze restaurant, adjacent to the lobby while I waited. I was offered a cool towel and a local drink to freshen up. Check-in staff verified my departure details and noted my gold status and the points bonus I would get. They came to the restaurant and gave me my key at around 2:00 PM.

Room: No additions to the comments previously made in this thread about the room. Very satisfied and happy with the room.

Facilities: Three main pools, one of which has a swim-up pool bar (nice). The main pool can get crowded, but you can always find a private area near the water sports center or further down the beach near the spa. The hotel houses a tour center from the lobby as well as its own activities in the recreation center. I joined the Kuah Town Night Market tour by bicycle which was RM 30, a worthwhile and fun jaunt into town.

Spa: I had a "Heavenly Massage", which was 80 minutes long. You get a 20%discount for bookings made in advance or before 11:00 AM. Nice spa, and you are given time for a shower afterwards. The spa also has a lounge area and its own pool. Yoga classes are also taught here. I took this class one morning and I'd say it was at a low intermediate to intermediate level, though I believe the instructor will adjust the routine based on the experience level of the people taking the class. Regular classes were RM 80 per class; you can also book private classes on demand.

Restaurants: Used Breeze for lunch as noted before, and Taste, which is near the pool. The prices are low by western standards, but outrageously high by local standards. Food was good, but not that much better than going out into town on your own for 1/3-1/4 of the price. Drinks run around RM 25-30, food around RM 35-50 per dish.

The hotel runs a shuttle to Langkawi Fair (a shopping mall) where you can stock up on booze, food, and other shopping at more reasonable local prices. There is a massage center in this mall which provides full body and reflexology foot massages. I got a 45 min foot massage here for RM 50.

I noticed that the floor in my room wasn't fully cleaned every day (but clean enough), and one day I came back and it was still wet. This was by no means a big deal (esp since its hard to keep rooms clean at resort where sand and dirt abound) but again, you wouldn't find this at a five star.

Airport Lounge-Nothing special, you have to pay for all food and drinks here, but at least it's air conditioned. No coffee when I was there, which would have been around RM 8-12. Non-guests of the hotel can enter at RM 10 a person.

I used the airport pickup service to arrive, which runs RM 80 but took a regular taxi to return, which was RM 24.
