Le Meridien IMHO is the place to stay in town. Just 1.5 years old, the rates are very good, they provided an upgraded seaview room for this gold on a last minute booking. 312RM all in. Breakfast was good. Rooms are immaculate, very contemporary, great bathroom and staff was good. Much nicer than the newly re-constituted Westin Langkawi Resort and (Spa ?) which I do not think will make it as a Westin when viewed by normal patrons of Westins in respect to the room and bath. Must say that the staff at Langkawi are some of the best in Asia.
Le Meridien KK is just across the street from Portview, an excellent seafood restaurant, both AC and open air eating . Fairly pricy for Borneo, but still cheap by western standards but higher, as expected, than Thailand. Food is prepared in the Chinese style prevalent in Malaysia. Thai style is normally not found. You can always ask for more spice heat. Chili crab (flower crab) was quite tasty. Sri Lankan crab as found in Singapore is much better, if you can find it in KK.
If you like the KL Hilton room, you will like KK Le Meridien.
Sheraton Langkawi does not hold a candle to the new Westin. It is an older property based on a bungalow style (I believe two units per bungalow). As a gold, per front desk (only stopped by, did not stay) you should be upgraded to a seaview bungalow. Rooms were nice, reminiscent of Krabi Sheraton, but not as nice a property. No comment on food. At Westin on soft opening we got dinner buffet as well as breakfast. Great preparation, Westin staff quickly responded to request such as lime for the papaya. Interesting appetizers and deserts.
