Most airlines will want to see the first full statement for the calendar year in which you are requesting matching status. Ie: if you want 2008 match on AS for UA they will request the first full statement issued by UA in 2008 (not mid-Dec 2007 - mid-Jan 2008) to verify the status. Additionally, I wouldn't put it past the airlines to have an internal contact at other airlines to verify that status. Hence, if you have status that ends, and want reciprocal status that would technically begin after the original status ends, they may catch that through the verification process. If not - hey, you got one over on them BUT I do agree, that is rather underhanded and not "above-board."
