The last MD82 flights were 31Oct99. I was on one that day from GRR-MSP. The plane had not been catered - there were not even beverage carts on board. The crew announced that this was this particular a/c's last revenue flight and apologized for the lack of service.
The DC9-10's went out in Jan 04. The major reason, IIRC was that they lacked the technology to comply w/ new FAA regulated reduced separation policies.
The last 72S flight was NW560 DEN-MSP 7 Jan 03. The link below is to a release regarding the 727 retirement. It also states that the DC10-40 was retired in late 2002.

That sounds about right - I was flying DTW-TPA in late 2002 and I got bumped off of the A320 from DTW-TPA.
I was then put on a DC-10-40 DTW-MEM, followed by a 727-200 for MEM-TPA. That turned out to be my last 'domestic' DC-10-40 I flew on as well as my last 727 flight in the same day. Shortly thereafter I recall NW stopped flying the 727-200 completely.
