I booked (or not) A/C seats in hopes of B staying vacant. No guarantees, but why not try? Worse case scenario, someone arrives to sit in B and ends up in A or C. Win for him/her, loss for us. Yes, the cure-all is to purchase a seat, which we'll obviously start doing in 4 mos. It was good while it lasted.

Seat assignments have been discussed online here (not necessarily on the F9 board but others) ad infinitum. I won't even go into the discussion. Just a couple of comments tho...had you selected AC in the last row of the a/c, you have a better chance of keeping those seats. And, provided the a/c is not full, the middle seat may have remained open.
However, keep in mind if the flight is full, all of the seats in the back usually get filled before some of the seats upfront which are held for ato checkin. Some people who just want to get to their destination (including non-revs) will take any available seat...middle, non-reclining and last row even.
Since you are a connoisseur of seats, it's a judgement call to seeking out that last row. The further forward you request an AC or DF seats, the more likely those middle seats will fill up because those unfortunate souls left with middle seats tend to request far forward as opposed to being stuck in the back of the a/c.
