In general, TA is good as highlighting bad properties. It is not so good at highlighting good ones, since experiences vary. You also need to separate general problems (thin walls, run down rooms) from specific problems (power cut during stay, sulky room service delivery). But you expect this - my brother stayed at the Heathrow Radisson last year and said it was the best place he had ever been (sheltered life!). Any review he wrote would be substantially different to one of mine.

A regular BA board poster who was GM of a London hotel told me that he and his staff ALWAYS talked through recent tripadvisor postings at their weekly staff meetings. This encouraged me to be more proactive in my own reviews, and I now list the things I would like to see improved, in the relative certainty that the GM WILL see them (and you'd be a pretty poor GM if you didn't check TA).

PS. The other thing to remember, and not mentioned so far, is that some hotels will leave false bad reviews for competitors as well as leaving glowing reviews for themselves! These are tricky to pick up.
Clearly this is what a good hotel does. It's a pity there aren't more of this ilk.
