I look at Trip Advisor before going somewhere, but even if there is a bad review, the place usually turns out nice. My thoughts are that someone probably had a bad experience and then took retribution, or that hotel management lurks on the sites and uses their reviews as comment cards.
In any case, please don't rely on what is written by a stranger on Trip Advisor. In theory (although I hope this would not happen) the competition across the street could write horrific stories about that place under an assumed identity in order to push business their way.
Edit: Let me add a little something to this. I do read all the reviews and give them consideration, but I don't take them as gospel. I am more apt to pay closer attention to the more recent ones.
