I would recommend that you visit a town on Lake Como called Varenna and stay at the Hotel du Lac (

You can get there by car or train. By car: take the SS36 Milano - Lecco - Varenna.
By train (1 hour): on the Milano - Sondrio line; station: Varenna/Esino.
My husband and I stayed here for two nights and it was one of the highlights of our time in Italy.
