This is also a US airline versus non-US airline issue. I blame the dynamic of the airline management (or lack of), greedy unions, and a FAA that doesn't care about passenger comfort or freedom for leading us to this horrible situation of very poor service on US airlines. Thankfully I rarely fly US airlines anymore and I now get great service in the air.
