Sadly, I had to do this as well. Needed a new passport for some travel almost a month away, but I'd be traveling away from any passport agencies in the US for that time, and I needed a physical visa in that time as well so I really did need my passport expedited. I ended up buying a refundable ticket to YOW and going back to the BOS passport folks the next day. Got new passport, refunded YOW ticket, got visa, travelled happily enough.
I really should've asked for the free 48 page passport then though... I'm going to need a new one within 18 - 24 months of the last passport at this rate.
(Why can't immigrations folks figure out how NOT to stamp your passport 3 pages down from the last stamp!? I guess they get better as it gets almost full...
