I had just come back from Eastern Europe - and got way too many stamps [especially on train border crossings] and was headed to Singapore. One morning, I grabbed a taxi to the U.S. Embassy in Singapore and as soon as I got out of the cab, I was 'identified' as an American and led straight to the head of the line. Once through security, I filled out an application in a small Passport/Visa Office and had just picked up an out-of-date copy of the New Yorker when they called my name. All in all, about twenty minutes. They just affix the new pages - lettered rather than numbered - stamp and sign it - and off you go.
