Call me cynical, but I think that the US carriers are publicy supporting the idiocy in anticipation of seeking governement handouts, a la post 9/11. Assuming that travel does tail off somewhat, their slim profits will disappear. Then, they can go to Congress for handouts, all the while claiming that the war on that mysterious noun is the root cause, but they are being good soldiers.
For the record, 100% of the airline employees that I have discussed the liquid ban with have agreed it is ridiculous.
That's certainly possible, but even after 9/11, there were some that didn't get handouts. UA was one of them, and they ended up in bankruptcy in 2002. So while they can hope for a handout if the time comes, they won't necessarily get it even if they are being "good" dubies.
