Call the AA RTW desk in the US and ask them. They are generally regarded as the ultimate official gurus. If they say no then you're almost certainly not going to make any progress.
I must admit I have never actually done this - it was just my interpretation of the rules. Can anyone provide first-hand experience of it being allowed?
