I was just making a reservation at GH Melbourne for some upcoming business travel. I found rates like 238.50 AUD for the Hyatt.com rate and 265 AUD for the prevailing rate--not surprising. Then there was the "Mystery Dice" rate of 275 AUD. Huh?
Clicking on "Rate Details" shows
"Valet Parking: City Club Health and Fitness Centre:1 Mystery Gift Per Night Per Room: Features: -on Check-in Guests Will Roll A Dice For A Mystery Gift -Receive 1 Mystery Gift Per Night, Per Room -the Mystery Gift Must Be Taken on This Particular Stay, Cannot Be Used For A Future Stay. -Mystery Gift May Include An Upgrade or Dinner or Breakfast or Massage Etc -Tax Included".
So for 10 AUD I can get a mystery gift. Have you ever heard of anything remotely like this outside of a casino?
My colleague pointed out that the full list of mystery gifts is not published--note the "Etc"--and "the Mystery Gift Must Be Taken". He warned me that the mystery gift might be a slap on the head with a wet haddock, and that if I book this rate I
must take it.
