I was also out of Israel when the crisis began and left my kids in the US. That of course was planned since December but may appear to some to have been done because of worries of their safety.

Same on the Israeli side. Those who stayed within the range of the rockets either didn't have the means to leave, had nowhere to go, or, like
Dovster and his daughter, had responsibilities that kept them tethered to their homes.
