As others have proposed
(see this thread), I think it is a good idea to require a new registrant to take a brief search engine tutorial before being allowed to create his first thread. They would see how to frame search queries for some real world questions.
At the end of the tutorial there would be a reminder that a good FTer
always searches for an existing answer before creating a new thread.
However, as already noted, there are always going to be some folks who don't much care about others, aren't willing to learn the rules, and think that their needs outweigh all other considertions. For them, the acerbic wit of many folks on this forum is a strong incentive to either get with it or get out.
These responses also often provide us all a great deal of entertainment.
