Hard to tell without knowing all the details. You agreed to abide by Expedia's rules when you bought the ticket, so they will probably be entitled to what they are asking for. Your odds of getting the airline to make your changes directly increase greatly after you've flown the outbound...call them up and ask them to make the changes for you.
