And more importantly, do you have two separate ticket numbers?
First thing I would do is check your itineraries on AA.com and see if you've been issued two separate seats on the same flight.
I don't have experience enough to know how Airliners/Travel Agents deal with obvious errors like this, whether you have a right to cancel, or whether it is a 'courtesy' they extend to clients. Still your emails make it clear that Expedia confused you enough to lead you into making this error.
The tricky part now is... do you want to call and cancel within the 24 hour window? You have the right with most airlines to do this, but Expedia has even more right to pull both bookings away from you.
Perhaps you should sit tight on this one and only call them 23 hours or so after you made the second booking and only ask them to look at that. You might be able to 'preserve' the first booking this way should Expedia play hardball.
I believe you were one of the last to make a booking before AA pulled the fares, seems amazing that a confirmation came through that night for you.
Please realise that I've never seen a case quite like yours so I really can't give you any real help or advice. Everything I've said is just guess work.
